Many of us don’t realize that Florida is one of the 29 states where you can be fired from your job simply for being gay or transgender. A growing number of Floridians continue to support equality for gay and transgender people.
So why is it still legal to fire someone for being gay or transgender in Florida?
We ask ourselves the same question. We believe the answer lies within Florida’s business community. Inclusive employment protections for people who are LGBT is good for business. Our business community can lead the way for fair and equal employment protections to be achieved in local and state government. That’s why we are partnering with the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce to roll out the South Florida Business Equality Index.
The Index gives a one-of-a-kind look into South Florida’s businesses and their treatment and support for the LGBT community. Since business, more often than not, leads government in innovation and inclusion, the Index will help accelerate change so that public policy will match its private industry and make fair employment protections a reality.
To be part of the South Florida Business Equality Index simply go to www.savedade.org and download your Index application. Submissions are open through July 1st 2011.
Rankings will be published by the end of September.
